Only Believe

Luke 8: 50

“But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.”

Elder Harris and I have continued to witness miracles in Asokore. Two weeks ago we were eating lunch in a chop bar when a man came to us telling us that he wanted to join our Church. We actually have a lot of people who do that, but most of them are not serious. We gave him our number and told him to call us because he did not have a phone for us to call him. His name was Maxwell. The next Sunday my companion and I were getting dressed when our phone rang. My companion picked it up and it was Maxwell, he was at the Chapel and wondering where we were. We dressed quickly and biked to the Chapel. Maxwell was there, wearing skater shoes, a pair of white jeans, and a blue shirt that read "Don't Worry Be Happy." We taught Maxwell after Church that day and then set an appointment to come and see his house. He speaks English and can write a bit but cannot read. When we gave him the Book of Mormon he said, "One day I will read this."

Asokore is a very hilly place. Maxwell actually lives on the side of a mountain that surrounds the Koforidua Valley. He met us at the base and we hiked nearly to the top and found his broken down home. He moved to Koforidua for work, so was staying temporarily in this house. It was one room with the roof only covering half of it. There is no electricity there. On the floor was a thin sleeping pad and in the corner was a small pile of neatly folded clothes, the same clothes he wore to Church on Sunday. The white jeans and blue t-shirt, neatly washed and ready to wear to Church again. My heart nearly overfilled when I realized that that was his best clothes that he had worn to Church, clothes I had worn to work at home. Yet in all of these circumstances, Elder Harris and I found a faithful son of our Heavenly Father, full of faith and hope. Believing in the Lord's timing. By the end of our lesson Maxwell could read 2 Nephi 2: 25. “Adam fell that men might be, and men are that they might have joy.” Maxwell believes that we are here to find joy. He believes in a Heavenly Father who loves him. I pray that we can choose to believe, even when it may be the only thing we have left.

I love you all.
